Review by Charles Cuttone Big Apple Soccer

Clive Toye tells the story of the NASL from its humble, even poor, beginnings to its dominance as the major influence on the North American soccer scene.

There are few, perhaps none who could tell the story better. After all, Toye was there for every minute of the league’s existence, from its very beginnings and his days as General Manager of the Baltimore Bays, through the Cosmos years, and later with the Chicago Sting and Toronto Blizzard.

Toye is a wonderful storyteller, and uses that talent well to convey the essence of the NASL’s highs and lows through a marvelous collection of anecdotes—many of them hilarious. Together, they tell the story of the NASL, which started on a shoestring, rose to huge success, and ultimately crashed under the very weight of that success.
