Canada U20 Women Set Up Camp In Vaughan

Canada names roster for women’s U-20 camp in Vaughan
Canada’s women’s U-20 team has announced the roster for the second identification camp which runs this May 13-16 in Vaughan, ON. Coach Carolina Morace has selected 24 players for the four-day camp which will conclude with an exhibition match on May 16 .

“This camp will help identify players that could become part of our national U-20 program,” said national head coach Carolina Morace.

The Vaughan camp follows a similar four-day identification camp in Surrey, BC which runs May 9-12. In both camps, the first three days feature both morning and afternoon sessions. The 12 May exhibition match against Vancouver Whitecaps FC takes place at South Surrey Athletic Park in Surrey, BC. The May 16 exhibition match against Toronto Lady Lynx takes place at Vaughan Grove in Vaughan, ON.

Many of the players in both camps have previously taken part in the BMO National Championships or Canada Games Women’s Soccer Tournament. Most of the players also come from Canada’s National Training Centre Programs in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Of note, five players in the Vaughan camp recently represented Canada at the 2010 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship in Guatemala: Dayle Colpitts, Shelina Zadorsky, Julie Casselman, Christabel Oduro and Adriana Leon. Two other players were also in Guatemala to train as non-roster players while also gaining experience with the U-20 team: Catherine Charron-Delage and Hannah Rivkin.

Goalkeeper Brooke McCurdy had been called into the camp, but was unable to participate because she is sick. Canada Games champion Gurveen Clair, who also took part in the Surrey camp, replaced McCurdy on the Vaughan roster.

Canada’s women’s U-20 team is just starting to prepare for the next FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup cycle in 2012. Players selected for this camp are all born 1992 or 1993 and are thus eligible for the 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship. That CONCACAF championship will serve as the qualification route for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2012.
