De Vos brings high hopes into second half of soccer career
Defender hangs up boots to help develop Canadian game

Jason De Vos has been a soccer professional since he was a 16-year-old with the London Lasers of the now-defunct Canadian Soccer League. Eighteen years, six clubs and a great deal of hard work later, that ended the moment the final whistle went on Ipswich Town’s last game of this season against Hull City.

If there was any doubting the Ipswich captain’s popularity, it vanished at that moment. As the players paraded around the stadium to salute their army of fans, a guard of honour was formed for the defender who had played every minute of every game in a Championship league season in which the club missed the playoff for a spot in England’s Premier League by a whisker.

When I spoke with De Vos in London yesterday, he had already moved on. He arrives home in our London on Tuesday and, on Saturday, will be in a TV booth to watch Toronto FC play Columbus at BMO Field. That is the moment we can all start to listen to Canada’s newest voice of soccer. Jason De Vos has a new career: CBC commentator.
