Fury Unleash 7 Goals
The Ottawa Fury Women handed the Rochester Rhinos women their first home loss of the season on Saturday night at Paetec Park when they unleashed an unanswered seven goal barrage. The two clubs entered the match-up sharing 3rd place status in the Northern Division of the USL-W-League, each with a 3-1-0 record.
The Fury made a fast start with leading scorer Shay Powell latching onto a through ball form Jennifer Hance and blasting a great shot past Joy McKenzie in the Rhinos goal in the third minute of play. The red hot Powell has now scored in every one of Ottawa¹s first five games and took her season tally to seven. The Fury continued their onslaught with Jodie Taylor missing a good chance in the 4th minute. Two minutes later however, they would double their lead when Courtney Wetzel volleyed home a cross from Adrienne Ruhe-Lischke. The game settled after this furious start and while the Fury held the upper hand in shots and possession, they would not increase their lead until the 42nd minute when Jennifer Hance headed home from Anna Caniglia.
In the second half, the Fury would score four further goals to run out 7-0 winners. In the 56th minute Taylor made a fine run down the left before feeding Wetzel for her second goal of the evening. Taylor would add a marker of her own in the 65th minute and Anna Caniglia would score number six following a corner kick. Coach Craig Smith, with one eye on Sunday¹s top of the table clash with division leading Toronto, substituted freely in the second half and the scoring was rounded out when Christina Julien shot past McKenzie in the 87th minute.
The Fury outshot the Rhinos 19 to 7 with Erin Reinke picking up the shutout for Ottawa. The Fury (now 4-1-0) continue their road trip with an afternoon game against the unbeaten Toronto Lady Lynx (7-0-1) at Varsity Stadium in Toronto on Sunday. The Fury will be looking to redress a 2-1 loss to the Lynx in Ottawa last weekend.
