Fury Women Fly Past Gryphons
The Ottawa Fury Women (1-0-0) scored an emphatic 6-0 win over the London Gryphons (2-2-0) at the Algonquin Soccer Complex on Saturday evening to register their second successive win of the season. The Gryphons had no answer to an onslaught from Ottawa who scored four second half goals to add to two markers in the first half. The Fury continue their home stand against the unbeaten Toronto Lady Lynx (5-0-1) at Algonquin tomorrow evening, kick off 6:00 PM.
Unlike in their opening game where the Fury had to wait until added time to score, Emma Mattsson put Ottawa on the board in the 2nd minute when she locked onto a through ball from Ashly Kennedy and looped the ball over the advancing Kelly Zinkeiwich into the London goal. The Fury gained control of the midfield early with Jennifer Hance and Zoe Avner prominent and scored a second goal in the 17th minute when Sarah Sample scored with a low rasping shot into the bottom left corner, after an exquisite dummy by Mattsson on a pass from Shay Powell unraveled the Gryphons defence. The Fury controlled play for the remainder of the half but failed to turn their advantage into goals.
In the second half, the Fury would take charge of the game to score four more unanswered goals but not before London had their best chance of the game in the 58th minute. A mix up between Fury keeper Diaz and her defenders let London¹s Treena Ferguson in on a header which looped just wide. As the half progressed, Shay Powell began to run the Gryphons defence ragged with her blazing speed. She was rewarded in the 66th minute when she latched onto a chip over a defender and lashed her shot across the box into the bottom left corner to give the Fury a three goal cushion. Four minutes later Sample doubled her tally after a great run by Gina Pacheco ended in a one-two between Sample and Powell which sprung Sample and she roofed it past keeper Zinkiewich. Fury coach Craig Smith substituted freely at this point but the goals continued to flow. In the 75th minute Ciara McCormack took a pass from a free kick and unleashed a 30 yard strike which beat the London keeper and crashed in off of the crossbar. There was still time for Rachael Axon and Adrienne Ruhe-Lischke, both making their first appearances of the season, to combine in the 85th minute with Axon crossing to the far post for Ruhe-Lischke to slot home.
The Fury record now stands at 2-0-0 while the Gryphons drop to 2-3-0. Kimberly Diaz and Caroline Robert shared the shutout. Robert, a Fury youth player, made her Fury debut when she came in for Diaz in the 66th minute..
