Kristina Kiss announces her retirement
Kristina Kiss, a two-time member of Canada ’s national team at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, has announced her retirement. Kiss was on Canada ’s roster at both USA 2003 when the team finished fourth and China 2007 when the team finished ninth in the world.
“I’d like to thank my family, teammates and coaches, but in particular my dad and Traian Mateas,” said Ms. Kiss. “Thanks to Silvana Burtini and Charmaine Hooper for being excellent role models and welcoming me onto the team. I’d like to wish the next generation luck with their new and exciting style of play.”
Kiss’ most memorable highlights include the run to fourth place at the FIFA Women’s World Cup USA 2003 and the Association’s first-ever qualification for the 2008 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. She also won a silver medal at the XIV Pan American Games Santo Domingo 2003 and a bronze medal at the XV Pan American Games Rio 2007. At Santo Domingo 2003, she scored Canada ’s lone goal in the 1:2 a.e.t. loss to Brazil in the final.
In all, Kristina made 75 appearances with Canada ’s national team, 11th most on the all-time list. She was just 19 years old when she made her first appearance on 12 March 2000 at the Algarve Cup in Portugal . She scored her first goal in her fifth appearance on 31 May 2000 (a 2:1 win over New Zealand ).
Before joining the national team, Kristina played her club soccer in her hometown Ottawa , ON . She went to the BMO National Championships on two occasions with South Nepean United, winning the Jubilee Trophy in 1998 and winning a bronze medal in 1999. In the 2000s, Kiss played three seasons of professional soccer with IF Floya in Norway .
In 2008, Kiss helped Canada finish second at the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament, thus securing Canada’s first-ever berth to the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. After being named an alternate to the Olympic team in July, she made her final appearance with the national team on Jul. 26, 2008 in Singapore . In that 8:0 victory over Singapore , she scored the eighth and final goal of her international career.
