MLS 2012: Week 22 Recap
PORTLAND, OR– The battle between the two teams at the bottom of the Western Conference ended in a stalemate as the Portland Timbers and FC Dallas played to a 1-1 draw on a hot, steamy Sunday afternoon at JELD-WEN Field. A goal by FCD forward Scott Sealy in the 51st minute – beautifully assisted by midfielders Brek Shea and David Ferreira – had Dallas in line for their second consecutive victory over Portland before a Zach Loyd red card and a late Jack Jewsbury golazo brought the hosts level.
SEATTLE, WA — In a showdown between two of the hottest teams in MLS, the drama was extinguished early. The Seattle Sounders opened the scoring in the 6th minute and all but ended it with a pair of goals 10 minutes apart early in the second half to coast to a 4-0 win over the LA Galaxy in front of 60,908 fans at CenturyLink Field on Sunday.
COMMERCE CITY, CO – Joseph Nane’s first career goal was the difference as the Colorado Rapids snapped a franchise-tying six-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday night. The win wasn’t enough for the Rapids to claim the Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup after RSL won the two sides’ first two meetings earlier this season, but Colorado collected their first points since a 3-0 win over Portland on June 30.
BRIDGEVIEW, IL – After two glaring defensive miscues, it was heroics by a defender that proved the difference on Saturday night as a late header by centerback Austin Berry pushed the Chicago Fire to a 2-1 win over visitors Toronto FC at Toyota Park.
MONTREAL, QC – It ended ugly, but the Montreal Impact made a big statement with a 2-0 win over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday night at Stade Saputo. Andrew Wenger headed in his fourth goal of the season off a set piece for the Impact’s fourth straight victory at home, and Felipe added a second to ensure Montreal remain in the race for a playoff spot.
WASHINGTON, DC – Chris Pontius scored his 10th goal of the year as D.C. United kept pace in the Eastern Conference race with a 1-0 victory over the Columbus Crew on Saturday night at RFK Stadium. Pontius got credit for the goal in the 49th minute, but Nick DeLeon did all the work. Dwayne De Rosario fed the rookie on the right flank, and DeLeon dribbled into the corner and cut back on Crew defender Josh Williams.
FOXBOROUGH, MA – An alert piece of play by Teal Bunbury handed Sporting Kansas City a first victory in four matches with a 1-0 win over New England at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night. Bunbury took advantage of a loose sequence by the Revolution in midfield to create his own breakaway opportunity and polish off his fourth goal of the season in the 20th minute.
HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Dynamo registered their fifth straight win and leapfrogged the New York Red Bulls into first place in the Eastern Conference after handily defeating them 2-0 on Friday night at BBVA Compass Stadium in the debut of new Red Bulls designated player Tim Cahill.
