Early thoughts on the Women’s World Cup
Given that every team at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup has now played one game each, I thought it would be a good time for some initial thoughts on the tournament so far.

1. Germany is the real deal.
Although the Germans only managed to beat Canada by a score of 2-1, their margin of superiority was not reflected in the score. They are the best team in this tournament – and many would argue that they are the best women’s team of all time.

They have one of the best goalkeepers in the world in Nadine Angerer, a back line that is imposing and efficient, a midfield that dominates possession, and an array of attacking options that cannot be equaled. In Alexandra Popp, they have one of the world’s finest talents – and she didn’t even make the Germans starting eleven.

Whoever wins this tournament will most likely need to beat the Germans, such is their superiority. Can Canada do it? They would have to make the finals for another chance to prove it.
