Ontario Cup 2009 Champions Off To Nationals

The 2009 Ontario Cup concluded play this past weekend, September 19-20 at The Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan — other Ontario Cup Finals finished September 12-13 and July 26.

Heading to this year’s 2009 BMO Nationals Championships on Thanksgiving Day weekend are:

• Real Toronto and the North London Galaxy to Saskatoon for the historic Challenge Cup
• Ajax Strikers Girls and Markham Lightning U14 Boys will be travelling to Sydney, NS for the U14 National Championships
• Ajax United Magic Girls and Ajax Gunners Boys will travel to Winnipeg, MB for the U16 National Championships
• Scarborough West Rouge Storm Girls and Niagara Falls Titans Boys will make their way to Edmonton, AB for the U18 National Championships

The Durham Region Soccer Association was extremely successful in this year’s competition, with one of its teams participating in 9 of the 22 Ontario Cup Final games. Of these nine Finals, seven of the teams claimed the victory and were crowned Provincial Champions.

Even more impressive, is the fact that five of these seven teams were from the Ajax Soccer Club making Ajax the top Club in the Cup this year. Only one other Club in Ontario Cup history has matched that tally, which was the Erin Mills Soccer Club in 2005.

The Peel Halton Soccer Association had 4 teams win the Cup Final, with 3 of those teams from Oakville Soccer Club.

The York Region Soccer Association also had 4 teams claim the title, while the Scarborough Soccer Association had two. The Niagara Soccer Association, South-West Regional Soccer Association, Essex County Soccer Association, Elgin Middlesex Soccer Association and North York Soccer Association each captured one Ontario Cup, while Soccer Northwest Ontario claims its first ever outdoor Ontario Cup with the Thunder Bay Chill winning the coveted Trophy.
