2009 ONTARIO INDOOR CUP FINISHES WITH 4 MORE CHAMPIONS
The Ontario Indoor Cup wrapped up this weekend, February 28-March 1, with Finals in the Under 14 and Under 16 Boys and Girls Divisions at the Soccer Centre in Vaughan. After a great set of games in the round robin on the Saturday, teams were primed and ready to take their chances at the Ontario Indoor title with Semi-Finals and Finals on Sunday. Erin Mills Soccer Club was very well represented this weekend, and had seven teams competing in the four divisions. Of those seven teams, six continued on to Cup Finals, and the Under 14 Girls and the Under 16 Boys divisions both featured an all Erin Mills Final.

Under 14 Boys
In the first Semi-Final of the Under 14 Boys division, the Erin Mills Eagles faced the London City Arsenal. In one of the tightest games of the weekend, both teams were evenly matched, making for a low scoring game. The first goal was scored by London City Arsenal #11 Danielo Bucci after a nice build up play, placing a side foot from just outside the box. London would hold onto the lead into the second half until Erin Mills scored the equalizer on a goal by #15 Leaford Allen from the right side of the box. The score did not budge from this tie, meaning the fate of the game would be decided in kicks from the penalty mark. Erin Mills Eagles seized a spot in the Final, with a score of 5 – 4.

In the second Semi-Final of the Under 14 Boys division, the Pickering Tigers played the Scarborough West Rouge Storm. Both teams created some great chances, so it was only a matter of who would score first. The first goal of the game was scored by West Rouge #18 George Meditskos on a header. Not one minute later, in a little game of “I can do that too!” Pickering equalized on a header by #3 Malcolm Shaw. The second half saw more back and forth play, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. The winning goal, by West Rouge #5 Brendon McGhee, was off a breakaway, resulting in a final score of 2 – 1 for Scarborough West Rouge Storm.

The Under 14 Boys Final pitted the Scarborough West Rouge Storm against the Erin Mills Eagles. The stage was set, the teams were ready, and it was time to play the game to decide the Provincial Champion. Erin Mills took control of the match, shutting out the Storm 3 – 0. The first goal of the game was Erin Mills’ #5 Yuvneesh Dhaliah on a four pass build up, sending the ball through the centre of the box. Erin Mills’ second goal was scored by #12 Justin Teelucksingh on a ball that was well-worked from the corner, then flicked up into the goal. Erin Mills added an insurance goal as #15 Leaford Allen scored on a three pass play with a sidefoot finish. The Erin Mills Eagles secured the win with a 3 – 0 finish, making them Provincial Champions.

Under 14 Girls
In the first Semi-Final of the Under 14 Girls division, the Vaughan Azzurri faced off against the Erin Mills B Lady Eagles. The only goal of the game would come to #16 Rachel Bronzovich in a “right place at the right time” kind of goal, as she capitalized on the keeper’s giveaway in front of an empty net. This lone goal would prove to be all that was necessary to secure Erin Mills’ spot in the Final, as they won the match 1 – 0.

In the second Semi-Final of the Under 14 Girls division, the London Gryphons Academy met the Erin Mills Striking Eagles “C”. Both teams brought pressure to the field, pushing for a scoring opportunity. Erin Mills #10 Kennedi Herrmann took care of business on a header from a long pass over the keeper’s head. This goal was the only one of the game, resulting in the Erin Mills Striking Eagles “C” moving on to the Final with a score of 1 – 0.

In the first “Battle of Erin Mills”, it was the Erin Mills “B” Lady Eagles against the Erin Mills Striking Eagles “C”. In this division, there were three Erin Mills teams in the Final Round this weekend, two of which continued to the Semi-Final and then to the Cup Final. It was apparent right away that this was not going to be an easy win for either of these two teams. The game was a deadlock, with not a single goal the entire game. It would take kicks from the penalty mark to finally decide a winner. The Erin Mills “B” Lady Eagles came out on top, winning the kicks from the penalty mark 2 -1.

Under 16 Girls
In the first Semi-Final of the Under 16 Girls division, the Erin Mills Eagles ’93 played the Brampton Brams United Blast. Each team played a strong defensive game, making it hard for any shots to amount to goals. The first half remained scoreless, as the first and only goal of the game would come in the second half. Erin Mills #7 Bianca Rossi won over a scramble and shot the ball past the keeper. The final score was 1 – 0 for Erin Mills Eagles ’93.

In the second Semi-Final of the Under 16 Girls division, the Oshawa Kicks Extreme met the Scarborough United Hurricane. The Oshawa Kicks did not waste any time, scoring the first goal within the first minute of play. Oshawa’s #8 Alyssa Riley took a clean hard shot from outside the box, finding the back of the net. In the second half, Oshawa’s #12 Maggie Carmichael wanted to get in on the action. On a breakaway, Carmichael shot a great ball into the corner of the net. Not even a minute later, it was Carmichael again that scored almost the very same goal, off a breakaway and into the corner of the net. Scarborough could not come back from this deficit, leaving the final score at 3 – 0 for Oshawa.

In the Under 16 Girls Final, the Oshawa Kicks Extreme met the Erin Mills Eagles ’93. In a game of back and forth chances, neither team could find the back of the net, forcing the decision to be made on kicks from the penalty mark as the game ended 0-0. Oshawa Kicks Extreme prevailed, outscoring the Eagles 2 – 1.

Under 16 Boys
In the first Semi-Final of the Under 16 Boys division, the Scarborough Wexford Heat was matched against the Erin Mills Golden Eagles. The first half of the game ended scoreless, despite both teams pushing for the advantage. The second was a different story, as Erin Mills #2 Ryan Garnett took a breakaway ball and sent it into the corner of the net. Erin Mills sealed the deal with a goal from #16 Oliver Richardson, a hard shot into the top corner of the net. The score was 2 – 0 for the Erin Mills Golden Eagles.

In the second Semi-Final of the Under 16 Boys division, it was the Erin Mills Eagles “B” versus the Woodbridge Strikers. The first half produced some good chances, but no one found the back of the net. The deadlock was broken as Erin Mills Eagles #6 Amad El-Houni, on a fast break, put the ball under the keeper and into the net. Not too long after, Erin Mills #11 Patrick Machniewicz, took a shot from outside the box that was deflected low into the far side of the net. Woodbridge could not find a way to get back into the game and the final score was 2 – 0 for Erin Mills.

In the Under 16 Boys Cup Final, two Erin Mills Soccer Club teams took to the pitch to find a victor. The Erin Mills Golden Eagles met fellow Club mates the Erin Mills Eagles B. The Erin Mills Eagles B team took the lead with a goal by #7 Aleksander Zwiezynski and then another by #14 Patryk Majcher. The Golden Eagles responded however, and #18 Andrew Sededuik scored twice to even the score, one of which was a goal scored on a penalty kick. With the score knotted at two going into the second half, the B team again took the lead when #14 Patryk Majcher notched his second of the game. Once again, the Golden Eagles managed to find the equalizer as Ryan Garnett found the back of the net. After 50 minutes of regulation time, the game ended in a 3-3 score, meaning the game would be decided by Kicks from the Penalty Mark. The Erin Mills Eagles B team outscored the Golden Eagles 2-1 in Kicks from the Penalty Mark, crowning the B team the Provincial Champions.
