Ontario Indoor Cup 2010: Final Results U13, U18
Ontario Indoor Cup Champions Crowned in U-13 and U-18 Boys and Girls Divisions
VAUGHAN, ON — The first of three Ontario Indoor Cup Final weekends was hosted at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan over the January 30-31 weekend. Four champions were crowned in the U-13 and U-18 Boys and Girls divisions.
Under 13 Boys
Mississauga Dixie Athletic defeated the Brampton Blast in the first semi-final of the day by a score of 4-1. Dixie’s goals came from Dayonn Harris, Jason Carvalho, Joshua Sousa, and Casey Preh. Julian Mullin scored Brampton’s lone goal.
Ottawa South United scored a big win in the second semi-final, defeating Erin Mills 5-0. Ottawa’s Kristopher Twardek led the attack with three goals, with Vana Markarian and Zachary Shankar adding a goal each.
The Under 13 Boys Final started with a bang, as two minutes into the first half, a huge save was made by the Dixie keeper. This would set the tone for the game, as both teams were well matched and hungry for a win. At the 18th minute of the game, Ottawa scored their first goal of the game on a give and go shot to the top corner, scored by Kristopher Twardek, assisted by Samuel Lowery. Dixie answered this goal with a goal by Casey Preh on a breakaway pass from Andre Dyer. The score remained tied at the end of the first half.
The second half of the game carried the intensity from the first, each team vying for the advantage. Ottawa secured their lead by the 17th minute of the second half, as Charles Andrascik scored from the left side on a long shot 15 yards out. With the pressure building and Dixie pushing their limits, Ottawa maintained their lead, and grabbed hold of the title Provincial Champion, winning the game 2 – 1.
Under 13 Girls
Brams United advanced to the Final with a convincing 5-0 win over Erin Mills. Mika Richards had two goals for Brams United, Rebecca Brmble, Miya Arcand, Anetra Byfield added a goal each.
The second semi-final placed the North Mississauga Panthers against the Erin Mills Eagles. Though second in their group heading into the Semi-Finals, the North Mississauga Panthers pulled through on a big semi-final win versus the Erin Mills Eagles, who were first in their group in the group round. With a final score of 3 – 1, the goals were scored by Erin Mills Megann Fletcher, and North Mississauga Panthers Erica Brunet (2) and Sarah Cola.
The Brampton Brams United Bandits were pitted against the North Mississauga Panthers in the Under 13 Girls Cup Final. The first ten minutes of the game started out slow from both teams. However, the pace of the game began to find its feet as teams pursued the goals. Brams United had a promising opportunity to score, as Anetra Byfield sent a through ball to Tanikah Roberts for a break away. Unfortunately for Brams, Roberts only managed to put the ball off the goal post. Neither team was able to score going into the second half as both teams were playing a very defensive game. The second half continued on like the first half, with the game looking for something brilliant to get the all important goal. With just over a minute left in the game, the brilliance came from North Mississauga’s goalkeeper, Kiah Francis to keep her team in it. Francis managed to keep the ball out of the net after a scramble and pressure from the Bandits. The game ended with a 0-0 tie, sending the teams to Kicks from the Penalty Mark. North Mississauga maintained their momentum from Francis’s big save, earning them the Provincial title by outscoring Brams United 3-2 in Kicks from the penalty mark.
Under 18 Girls
In the first Semi-Finals of the Ontario Indoor Cup Under 18 Girls division, the Burlington Sting defeated the Unionville Milliken Red Strikers by a score of 2-1. Burlington goal scorers were Jesse Shugg and Meghan Bourque. The lone goal scorer for the Red Strikers was Marissa Goldsmith.
The second Semi-Final game was played to a draw with the Erin Mills Eagles and the Thunder Bay Lakehead Express each netting two goals. Holly Bigg notched both goals for Erin Mills while Kaitlyn Quarrell and Jessica Mithrush each scored for the Lakehead Express. The winner of the game was the Erin Mills Eagles, outscoring the Lakehead Express in Kicks from the Penalty Mark by a score of 3-2.
In the Final, two Peel Halton teams, Burlington Sting and Erin Mills Eagles faced off for the provincial titles. Erin Mills took the lead first when Bianca Rossi ran the ball down the line and then crossed the ball into the goal area to Kristina Mlakar who slotted the ball into the net. Erin Mills then padded the lead with a goal seven minutes later. This second goal was scored on a three way pass with a good finish by Bianca Rossi. Burlington Sting responded a few minutes later when a scramble ensued in front of the Erin Mills goal and Cara Senese managed to find the back of the net. The second half of the game saw good action and a fast pace along with excellent goalkeeping from both teams. However, Burlington was unable to find the equalizer and Erin Mills Eagles went on to be crowned the Provincial Indoor Champions.
Under 18 Boys
The first Under 18 Boys Semi-Final featured the Thunder Bay Chill and the Ottawa Capital United. A 4-0 shut-out for Thunder Bay sends the Chill to the Cup Final. Gavin Hoy earned the hat trick with three goals for Thunder Bay while Jonathon Czaczkowski scored the other.
The Thunder Bay Chill will meet the Vaughan Azzurri Huskies in the Final after the Azzurri Huskies shut-out the Mississauga Falcons 2-0 in the other Semi-Final. The Vaughan goal scorers were Gaby Deller-Borgono and Storm Wishart.
Thunder Bay and Vaughan met for what proved to be a tremendous final. Both team showed they were deserving of their place in the final through their smooth attacking play, and timely defending. It was Thunder Bay that opened the scoring in the 23rd minute of the game. Max Vaclav did the work to fight for a half-breakaway and finish to give his side the 1-0 lead. Thunder Bay carried their slim lead into half-time.
Vaughan came out on the attack in the second half, pressing hard for their equalize. They found it in the 15th minute of the second half, when Victor Minatel capitalized from a corner kick to tie the score at one each. Thunder Bay nearly reclaimed the lead, but David Toms effort came back off the post. The U-18 Boys final would be decided by kicks from the penalty mark. It took nine rounds of kicks to settle this final, but it was all over when Vincent Mizzi hit the decisive spot kick for Vaughan, giving them the 2010 Indoor Ontario Cup.
