Ontario Indoor Cup 2010: Final Results U15, U17

Ontario Indoor Cup Awarded in Under 15 and Under 17 Divisions
VAUGHAN, ON — The second of three Ontario Indoor Cup Final weekends was hosted at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan over the February 13-14 weekend. Four champions were crowned in the U-15 and U-17 Boys and Girls divisions.

Under 15 Boys
The Under 15 Boys kicked-off the day’s games in the first set of Semi-Finals. In one game, Erin Mills A defeated the Unionville Strikers Red 2-0. Erin Mills’ Michael Machniewiez and Yuvneesh Dhaliah were the goal scorers, while Joseph Kuta recorded the shut-out.

In the other Semi-Final, the Woodbridge Strikers West defeated the Brampton East Thunder by a 2-0 score. The goal scorers for Woodbridge were Sasha Ricciuti and Alain Sargeant. Christian Paniccia takes credit for the shut-out.

In the Final, Erin Mills A matched up against the Woodbridge Strikers West. In the first half of the game, Woodbridge controlled the majority of the possession, however, most of the game was battled in the midfield with very few chances on net. Erin Mills drew first blood with just over a minute left in the first half. The goal was credited to Shaqir Simpson who struck the ball with his left foot and knocked it into the bottom corner of the net. In the second half, both sides had many chances, but Woodbridge capitalized on one opportunity in the 17th minute of the half when Kwame Awvak ran up the middle and took a hard shot to the right corner, tying the game at 1-1. Neither team was able to score in the remaining minutes, sending the game to Kicks from the Penalty Mark. Woodbridge Strikers outscored Erin Mills 4-3 in Kicks from the Penalty Mark to earn the Provincial Indoor Cup Title.

Under 15 Girls
The Erin Mills Striking Eagles took on the Aurora Stingers in the first Under 15 Girls Semi-Final. Kennedi Herrmann scored for Erin Mills, and Vanessa Sansone equalized for Aurora. Erin Mills advanced by a 3-1 score on Kicks from the Penalty Mark.

The Erin Mills Mighty Eagles advanced 5-0 past the Nepean Hotspurs in the second Semi-Final. The Erin Mills attack was lead by goal scorers Colleen Milne (2), Nicole Zajac, Frances Borgmann, and Donika Murray.

It was an All-Erin Mills affair in the Under 15 Girls Final, and the club’s talent was evident in this game. Both the Striking Eagles and the Mighty Eagles displayed their quality in the first half, creating scoring chances at both ends. Both goalkeepers did well to keep the game scoreless going into halftime. The Striking Eagles broke the scoreless draw nine minutes into the second half, when Danielle Canhoto hit home a cross from the left side from outside of the box. The Mighty Eagles did all they could in the remaining 15 minutes to equalize, but could not solve the Striking Eagles defense. The Erin Mills Striking Eagles kept their 1-0 lead to take home the Under 15 Girls Ontario Indoor Cup.

Under 17 Girls
The first Under 17 Girls Semi-Final featured the Markham Lightning and Woodbridge Strikers. Markham scored a decisive 3-0 victory on goals from Laura Gosse (2) and Jenna Thornber.

The Oshawa Kicks joined Markham in the final by beating the Brams United Blaze by a 2-1 score. Nikos Simmons scored both goals for Oshawa, while Sydney Horeau scored Brams United’s loan goal.
The Markham Lightning encountered the Oshawa Kicks Extreme in the Under 17 Girls Final. The first 10 minutes of the game saw Oshawa with much of the possession and lots of shots on goal while Markham was forced to spend its time defending. Just two minutes into the game, Oshawa’s Julia Theophille received a ball on the wing and she played it across the net to the bottom corner to give her team a 1-0 win. Markham became more involved in the last five minutes of the half and began to put the pressure on the Oshawa team. Despite the pressure, Markham ran out of time and with seconds left in the game, Oshawa’s Alyssa Riley added the insurance goal. Oshawa Kicks Extreme defeated the Markham Lightning 2-0 to become the Ontario Indoor Cup Champions.

Under 17 Boys
In the first Under 17 Boys Semi-Final, two teams from the Erin Mills Soccer Club met each other, the White Eagles and the A team. A well matched game resulted in a 2-1 win for Erin Mills A. The goal scorers for the A team were Ryan Garnett and David Serafini. The lone goal scorer for the White Eagles was Daniel Rutkovski.

In the other Semi-Final, the Scarborough Wexford Heat matched up with the London United Mavericks.This fast paced game saw many goal scoring opportunities for both teams however, Wexford scored first and then kept momentum to win 2-0 over London. Esau Powell and Mark Provost scored for the Heat.

In the Final, Erin Mills A took on the Scarborough Wexford Heat. Wexford put the “heat” on Erin Mills in the first half when Matthew Gord took a hard shot from 5 yards out that deflected by the keeper into the net at the 15 minute mark of the game. Five minutes later, Mark Provost gave his team a 2 goal lead when his corner kick deflected off an Erin Mills defender and went in the net off the post. The second half however, belonged to Erin Mills. Less than a minutes into the half, David Serafini blasted a shot from 7 yards out that went in off the post. About ten minutes later, Erin Mills’ Ryan Garnett scored the equalizer for his team. Erin Mills then took the lead when Ryan Escobar found the back of the net. Wexford had an opportunity to draw even, but had a goal called back for having an extra player on the field. Erin Mills added an insurance goal in the last 5 minutes of the game when David Serafini netted his second of the game. Erin Mills A was crowned Provincial Champions with a 4-2 win over the Wexford Heat.
