Hearns Hattrick Keeps Fury Perfect
Rochester, NY — The Ottawa Fury Women (5-0-0) remain perfect thanks in large part to a three-goal second half effort from Amber Hearn in a 4-0 victory over the Rochester Ravens (0-6-1).
The Fury dominated control throughout the first half with Evans, Hearn, Hance, Romagnuolo and Bethke all getting chances on goal. Despite their efforts the Fury were unable top beat the Ravens keeper and when Hearn did deep into injury time her defence was there to clear it off the line keeping the game scoreless through 45 minutes.
Expecting more from themselves the Fury continued to press to open the second half and were reward inside the first two minutes when Amber Hearn scored her 5th of the season in the 47th minute after Katie Bethke redirected a Jennifer Hance cross right into Hearn’s path. Five minutes later the Kiwi connection struck as Hearn notched her second of the game off a well-placed cross from fellow Kiwi Ria Percival.
The Fury continued to press but Romagnuolo, Raber and Percival were unable to convert, but Amber Hearn changed their luck placing home a Michelle Evans cross for the hattrick. With their passes connecting and the Ravens having no answer for the Fury’s speed and control Tina Romagnuolo tallied her 1st in Fury colours to make it 4-0 with Katie Bethke collecting her second assist of the afternoon.
Fury Youth graduate Riley Filion made her Fury W-League debut as did Fury newcomer Amanda Robinson. Yewande Balogun made her first start of the season and collected the shutout.
With the win the Fury now move to first place in the Great Lakes Division as the only unbeaten team in the division.
The Fury return home to face the Quebec City Amiral (5-1-0) on Thursday night at 7pm at the Algonquin College Sports Complex.
Fury Quell Flash to Remain Undefeated
Orchard Park, NY — The Ottawa Fury Women (4-0-0) collected their fourth straight win defeating the W-League’s second professional franchise, the Buffalo Flash (3-1-0), by a 1-0 score on the shoulders of a first half goal by Jennifer Hance.
Tonight’s game pitted the two undefeated teams in the Division against each other in what will likely prove to be a key battle for the Great Lakes Division title.
The Flash opened the game brightly and forced two early saves from Fury keeper Jasmine Phillips on shots from Ameera Abdullah and RoseAnna Tantrillo. The Fury gradually gained the ascendancy and went close on a header from Amber Hearn on a free kick from Michelle Evans and a through ball from Jennifer Hance from which Gina Pacheco’s shot was cleared off the line by the Flash.
As the first half came to a close, the Fury forced 4 successive corners and from the fouth, Hance rose above the Flash defence to convert a Michelle Evans free kick in the 43rd minute to give the Fury a 1-0 lead going into half time.
In he second half, the Flash tried to apply pressure on the Fury defence as high up the field as possible. Now, it was the Flash’s turn to gain 4 successive corners and from the third the Fury’s required several desparate goalmouth clearances to secure their lead at 1-0.
As the game wore on, the Fury regained the momentum and began to extert pressure on the Flash defence. Ria Percival shot just over the bar from 30 yards and then a Michelle Evans free kick brought a fine save from Amanda Becker in the Flash goal. Both teams missed good late chances as both the Flash’s Giana DeSaverio and the Fury’s Gina Pacheco failed to convert when well placed..
The first half strike from Hance gave Ottawa what proved to be a lead that they would not relinquish handing the Flash their first loss of the season. Fury keeper Jasmine Phillips collected her second shutout of the season.
