Fury owner builds teams from the ground up
I am sure the last way John Pugh would like to be described is ”Sugar Daddy.” But, to a particular level, that is what the owner of the Ottawa Fury is to the club’s men’s and women’s teams, although he prefers “benefactor.”

“That’s the way with all teams at the senior level — Joey Saputo in Montreal, Greg Kerfoot in Vancouver,” he says of the owners of those cities’ United Soccer Leagues First Division teams. “Obviously, to a lesser degree, the Fury benefactor is John Pugh.”

That doesn’t mean players get paid — they are amateurs. They are found places to live, but still, running senior teams is not a cheap exercise.
