Venue

Highlights
10 min … White Eagles (actually TFCA own goal)
SWE Milos Scepanovic cornerkick from right has TFCA Matthew Stinson flick header from 5 yards from center to top left corner of own net with goalie Angelo Cavalluzzo anchored to the center of the net. The SWE players congratulated Stefan Vukovic and I thought he’d scored. It took until halftime before it was finally straightened out.

48 min … TFCA Joshua Janniere GOAL
Janniere rushes through the middle from 45 yards and splits the defence and his 18 yard shot is into the right side of net under the flying goalie Milos Kocic.

Notes
Attendance was about 150 on this hot and humid evening. The crowd was actually larger than the last few games at BMO Field right after the MLS Toronto FC game and last week when they were bumped to Brockton Stadium. White Eagles had some fans at tonight’s game.

Gianni Facchini was the referee tonight and didn’t give out many cards between the two well disciplined teams.

White Eagles used veteran Sasa Viciknez the start tonight and kept him in for 86 minutes. Shawn Brown was brought in at 60 minutes for the offensive and replaced the other SWE forward, Stefan Vukovic.

Best non-scoring chances were at 14 minutes when TFCA Allando Matheson rolled a pass to Jonathan Almedia at 15 yards and from 6 yards had SWE Mirko Medic make a sliding tackle to poke the ball away. Just after the TFCA goal, SWE Sasa Viciknez took a 10 yard shot down the middle that was just wide right of the post at 50 minutes. At 66 minutes, Matheson broke in on a defender’s miscue and his 10 yard shot was stopped point blank by the goalie At 78 minutes Milos Scepanovic cornerkick from the right had a charging Viciknez head the ball from 6 yards just wide right of the net.

TFC Academy players are all trying to make the MLS Toronto FC some day. Some injured players in the press box said there will be some changes to this ‘senior’ team that plays in the CSL in that some of the players will be taking scholarships and be off to school in late August and their places will be taken by some of the ‘junior’ team players who play on the TFCA team in the CSL Reserves League.

Closest to making Toronto FC though is White Eagles goalie Milos Kocic. Dragan from the White Eagles is worried that soon TFC will pull its ‘loan’ of the player and bring him on to the MLS team as their Number 1 goalie. Negotiations are being worked out to have Stefan Frei transferred to English Premier side Stoke City for 3 million UK pounds. MLS league will keep 65% and TFC 35% of the transfer fees. Deadline for this is August 31st.

Kocic has had experience playing in the MLS as he’s played for DC United in the past. He also played for Toronto FC earlier this year in the final game of the Nutrilife Canadian Championship against Vancouver Whitecaps when they had already clinched the trophy with one game to go. Ironically that was also the game that seven TFC Academy players were named to the MLS roster for that game.

Tonight’s tie brings the White Eagles up to a three way tie for 6th place although they have four games in hand on the teams they’re tied with. TFC Academy are held back from leaping into a tie for 2nd place in the thirteen team league.

Notes
ttendance was about 100 on this very hot and humid day.

The Avalanche defensive strategy which worked quite well through most of the game was the offside trap. The Lady Lynx were caught offside eight times in the first half and nine times in the second and resulted in two goals being called back. Both teams emptied their benches in the second half to keep fresh legs on the field.

Referee Zac Taylor had a very tame and open game to call with him only giving out one Yellow card to each team.

Sabrina D’Angelo earned the shutout for the Lady Lynx. (first string goalie Justine Bernier was not at today’s game but should be in the playoff game). The Avalanche didn’t have a shot at the net in the first half and only some routine long shots on net in the second. Victoria Muccilli had to be sharp to keep the game from hitting double digits but more accurate shooting by the Lady Lynx would also have seen them hit ten goals. This is the first game all season that the Lady Lynx have scored more than two goals in one game. They finish their regular season with 7 wins, 2 losses, and 3 ties. Hamilton finishes the season at 1 win, 11 losses.

The win today clinches a home playoff date for the Lady Lynx. They finish second and will host the third place team either Laval Comets or Quebec City Amirals on Wednesday at Centennial Stadium at 3:00pm (the only time they could get a rental on such short notice). The Toronto Lynx men’s team plays Michigan Bucks at 7:00pm after that game.
