Notes
Attendance was about 200 on this warm afternoon with a bright sun in the south west and a light breeze from the west. The crowd included three girl’s Under 12 teams from the area which meant that family and parents were there too. Prize draws and t-shirt throws were held during halftime by team sponsor Moxie’s Classic Grill.
This game turned in to a rout at the time Astros Kurt Ramsey was red carded. He was their most experienced defender. The team didn’t adapt at bringing a player back to cover his spot and that’s what started a barrage of 2 on 1 or outright breakaways during the last 35 minutes.
Garrett Cyprus earned the shutout for the Academy although except for leaping to catch a few freekicks and cornerkicks into the box, he didn’t have much to do and nothing during the entire second half.
I was most impressed by Academy players Allando Matheson for being to capitalize on scoring chances unlike other times I’ve seen him this season. Jonathan Lao was impressive as the cornerkick and freekick taker although I’ve seen him consistently play well in other games this season.
TFC Academy coach Jason Bent did his best to not run up the score by pulling off Allando Matheson after his third goal. Jonathan Lao even took a cornerkick back upfield for TFCA Matthew Stinson to take a 35 yard blast well over the net rather than play the ball into the box. The substitutes through are playing for a spot on the main team and this was their chance to show what they can do for next year’s team as many of the season starters have left for college and university. Jason Bent said after the game he used a lot of his reserve players for this reason.
TFC Academy guarantee that they don’t finish 8th and likely avoid having to play Trois-Rivieres Attak in the first round of the playoffs. Jason Bent said it didn’t matter which team they played in the first round of the playoffs. He also said he couldn’t answer the rumour that the team would play its playoff home field at BMO Field.
There was no Danny Dichio at the game today. I said he was probably partying with the TFC team in Los Angeles. I am glad that Bent is still the coach! Let’s have Dichio start at a lower level of the Academy like the younger age groups that the team promises to start next year.
The TFC Academy has scored 15 goals in their last two games although these two games were against the only two teams that did NOT qualify for the playoffs (i.e. today and a 7-1 victory over London City).
