Watching The SuperDraft
The first SuperDraft I covered was in 2001 when it was still held in Florida, back in the days of dial-up modems. I drew the short straw and ended up manning the laptop rather than attending the event in person. It was much more likely that we would be able to get the draft results out as they happened without trying to get our equipment to work at a sports bar at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex.
In 2003, the SuperDraft made its debut as a feature attraction at the NSCAA Convention. Just like this year, that convention was held in Kansas City. I remember a packed room, as much to do with its actual size as interest, with people spilling out into the hallway. More than one MLS watcher told me later they couldn’t get in.
That was remedied in ’04, when the Charlotte hosted the NSCAA’s and used what amounted to a giant hallway to stage the draft. Plenty of room, but plenty of sunlight to go with it. An odd setting for something meant for television, to be sure. It was there that the SuperDraft as an event came into its own.
