A draw against Mexico? Big deal! Canada still stinks
I could practically hear the collective “see, I told you so” uttered by soccer fans across the country last night as I watched Canada earn a 2-2 tie against Mexico in a meaningless World Cup qualifying game.
After officially being eliminated from World Cup contention following a 3-1 loss in Honduras, our Canadian boys (who have yet to win a game in this semifinal qualifying round) decided to turn it on and gave the Mexicans, who had plenty to play for, all they could handle.
Apparently, Canada’s well-earned draw against a superior Mexican team was the silver lining around the dark cloud that perpetually hovers over our national team, the beacon of light at the end of a very long black tunnel.
Wednesday night’s performance was proof that our boys can compete in with the elite in CONCACAF and qualify for the World Cup, long-suffering Canadian fans no doubt bellowed.
If only Canada played like that through the first four games of the qualifiers, it might now be in a position to move onto the next round of the CONCACAF qualifiers, and finally make a run at qualifying for the World Cup – something the Canadian national team hasn’t done since 1986.
Utter nonsense, I say.
