Toronto FC Sees Big Game From Barrett, Wins 3-1

July 12, 2009 9:41 am

SANTA CLARA, CA — Chad Barrett had two goals and an assist to lift Toronto FC to a crucial 3-1 victory against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Toronto’s win, plus Chicago’s scoreless draw with Columbus earlier that night, moved Toronto (7-6-4, 25 points) into a first-place tie with the Fire in the Eastern Conference. D.C. United and Columbus, tied for third, trail Toronto and Chicago by only one point.

Barrett entered the match with only two goals and two assists despite starting 15 of Toronto’s first 16 games. But his offensive outburst was welcomed as Toronto begins the second half of the season attempting to solidify a playoff position.

Toronto scored second-half goals 15 minutes apart to clinch the victory. Pablo Vitti scored the eventual game-winner in the 54th minute. The winning goal wasn’t a work of art as much an act of desire. Barrett, who opened Toronto’s scoring with a goal in the fifth minute, flipped a high pass in the penalty area that defender Nana Attakora headed forward. Vitti outleaped San Jose’s defense and his backward header found the back of the Quakes’ net.
