U17s Play Honduras In CONCACAF Men’s U17 Championship Opener
Canada’s men’s U-17 team has announced its final roster for the upcoming 2009 CONCACAF Men’s U-17 Championship. The team will head to Tijuana, Mexico this Sunday to take part in the confederation qualification tournament for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Nigeria 2009. The eight-team tournament runs 21 April to 2 May.
“It has been an intense preparation period, but we are happy that the players met the challenges during the course of our different projects,” said head coach Sean Fleming. “We now look forward to seeing them become more determined as we head into the qualification tournament.”
Canada needs to win one of four available spots to the FIFA U-17 World Cup Nigeria 2009. Canada is in a group with Honduras, USA and Cuba with the top-two teams advancing to Nigeria 2009. The other group features Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago, Guatemala and host Mexico.
In the group schedule, Canada plays Honduras on 21 April, USA on 23 April and Cuba on 25 April. The top-two teams not only qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, but also advance to the confederation semi-final scheduled on 29 April. The championship final is scheduled for 2 May.
